To study in the Netherlands, international students typically need to follow these visa procedures:

  • Choose a program and institution: Select a program and institution in the Netherlands that matches your academic goals and qualifications. Ensure that the institution is recognized and offers courses suitable for international students.

  • Confirm eligibility: Check the specific eligibility requirements for the student visa or residence permit category you are applying for. The main visa for studying in the Netherlands is the Residence Permit for Study Purposes.

  • Admission and acceptance letter: Obtain admission to a recognized educational institution in the Netherlands. Upon acceptance, the institution will provide you with an acceptance letter or a Proof of Enrolment (PoE), which is required for your visa application.

  • Financial requirements: Demonstrate that you have sufficient financial means to cover your tuition fees, living expenses, and healthcare insurance. The exact amount required may vary depending on your circumstances and the duration of your studies.

  • Health insurance: Purchase a health insurance policy that meets the requirements set by the Dutch government for international students.

  • Language proficiency: Depending on the language of instruction of your chosen program, you may need to provide proof of your proficiency in English or Dutch. Accepted language tests include IELTS, TOEFL, and Cambridge English exams.

  • Visa application: Submit a visa application to the Dutch embassy or consulate in your home country or the nearest visa application center. Some students may also need to apply for a Provisional Residence Permit (Machtiging tot Voorlopig Verblijf – MVV) prior to entering the Netherlands.

  • Required documents: Prepare the necessary documents, which may include your passport, acceptance letter or PoE, financial documents, health insurance, language proficiency certificates, and a completed visa application form.

  • Biometric data and visa fee: Some applicants may need to provide biometric data (fingerprints and photograph) at the visa application center. Pay the applicable visa application fee, which can vary depending on your nationality.

  • Decision and collection: After processing your visa application, you will be informed of the decision. If approved, you will receive a sticker visa in your passport or a residence permit card (if you applied within the Netherlands). Collect the necessary documents as instructed by the embassy or consulate.

  • Arrival and registration: Once you arrive in the Netherlands, register with the municipality in the city where you will be residing and obtain a residence permit or residence permit sticker.
